Just out of curiosity, what school?

I agree: things are to some extent different now that costs have gone through the roof. Stroke an alum, or any rich person with a kid who wants to go to your school, and you may be rewarded. This is an unfortunate sort of affirmative action.

The schools themselves could, of course, make some changes. In my time we had one Dean of Students, who was also a professor of biology, and a dean for each class, all of whom also taught. Now Deanship is a Profession, and each dean has a staff of deanlets. Most far better paid than the teachers. Deans for every special interest group, oh yes. Reminds me of politics. And, like so much in politics, it's a waste of money.
