C'mon Janice, you are starting to make this seem like work.

Nixon did not ever work for McCarthy, though Bobby Kennedy did. McCarthy was bankrolled by Joe Kennedy and many credit McCarthy's failure to campaign for Henry Cabot Lodge as both payback and the reason why JFK won the very close 1950 Senate race in Massachusetts.

Alcoholism is what did McCarthy in. When McCarthy was censured by the Senate, conspicuously absent was a Masschusetts Senator by the name of Kennedy. Claimed excuse, back problems. Perhaps he meant backbone?
