jhild,

I am by no means an expert on Alzheimer's disease but know it can vary in intensity and degree of onset and in the rate of mental and physical decline from patient to patient. Alzheimer's disease is often used as a catch-all diagnosis for mental decline and dementia. Unless something has changed very recently, Alzheimer's disease can be diagnosed with certainty only by an autopsy.

Reagan could have suffered a catastrophic mental break from the trauma of the shooting, and such would be understandable and plausible. There also are the various possible sequelae of substantial blood loss to be considered.

However, it would not have done for the citizenry to to have any but the most heroic of perceptions of their President. To me this is another case of the media not doing their jobs and making the public aware of the seriousness of Reagan's injuries or their possible ramifications.

Again, I am merely speculating. I was not there and have not been privy to President Reagan's medical records.
