hello Bill,

I guess we were doing the same thing
yesterday... reading all the mapics posts
on this thread. Fortunately, they're are not
too many and most are short :) Congrats to
those who spotted this bird @10 and are
still holding. Why did this thing have to
move 10% last week?

Unfortunately, I won't provide much "technical"
information about whether this company has
a longterm competitive edge or not. Your point
about it porting its platform to Windows NT,
however, is important.

well, I just received my value line
investment survey, expanded edition and
a little piece of information stood out:
during the 3rd Q97, 46 institutions bought
in and ZERO sold. That's a lot of buying
here... Never saw such unanimous agreement,
unless the split with marcam had something to
do with this? However, according to Stocksmart,
13 institutions established new positions
whereas 11 liquidated during Q4... 84% of
oustanding shares were held by institutions.

Now, I noticed this thing
actually has a reasonable p.e.! (hard to find
a software company in todays market that has a p.e.
below 25!). This company has very
nice profit margins 14-16% and no longterm
debt. however, it's poorly ranked by value line at
4 for performance and 4 for technical, but who
cares for past performance (unless you held
the stock already).

I further found another piece of information
which I don't think was posted here...

INSIDERS BUYING:H MITCHELL WATSON
DIRECTOR Buy 5,000 $11 11/17/97
EDWARD J KFOURY
DIRECTOR Buy 10,000 $9 07/30/97
RICHARD C COOK
DIRECTOR PRESIDENT
AND CEO Buy 100 $9 07/30/97
WILLIAM E FORD
DIRECTOR Buy 5,000 $9 07/29/97

That's important! True, they bought lower than 15-16$
range, but they were buying, I'm sure, with the intention
of a hefty profit...

Now this seems to be an underfollowed stock,
as previous posters have mentioned. At
stocksmart site, I noted that only one
analyst is following the stock, with a strong
buy rating... Anyone knows who this might be
and whether he's done a good job in the past
of analyzing this company? Apparently, there
were two analysts following this stock as
of last week, but one (who had a hold) dropped
out of the game... I see the estimate for
next quarter is only 13cts/share...why so low?
Growth, year over year seems decent at around
20-30%, and although the next Q seems traditionally
weeker, could it be so much weeker? Does anyone
know when they are to announce their next Q?

you said you just discovered mapics... what
caught your eye?

Cheers,

Trilobyte

Bill, could be "MAPICS XA" has some sort of future, but think of all the baggage they have to carry along. In my view, Marcam saw it coming and developed a brand-new, object oriented, Win/NT based ERP system called "PROTEAN" to take them into the future. They can attempt to window-dress MAPICS all they can to milk it a little more, but to me PROTEAN's the future. What's your opinion??
