How might this affect ADPT? ALLENTOWN, Pa., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies' Microelectronics Group today announced it has received a contract to supply Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) with a custom input/output (I/O) controller chip for use in Sun's next-generation Java(TM) technology systems, workstations and servers. The chip, which will be jointly designed by Sun and Lucent, will enable Universal Serial Bus (USB) and High-Speed Serial Bus (IEEE 1394) connections between the workstations and peripheral devices. "Sun chose to work with Lucent because we share Lucent's commitment to developing open standards such as Universal Serial Bus (USB) and High-Speed Serial Bus (IEEE 1394)," said Jeff Elsmore Director of Workgroup Server Hardware Engineering for Sun. "Sun's strengths in high-performance ASIC design and system validation combined with Lucent's proven 0.35-micron CMOS process, mixed analog/digital integration capabilities and volume manufacturing capacity is a winning combination," said Elsmore. The chip is being designed in Lucent's 0.35-micron CMOS process. The companies plan to use Lucent's recently announced 0.25-micron modular process for future controller chips. Lucent offers a range of Fast Ethernet, USB and IEEE 1394 standard products and custom solutions for host and device I/O applications. Lucent's Silicon Suite(TM) for Fast Ethernet is targeted for 10/100 Mb/s network applications. Its Silicon Suite(TM) for USB is a comprehensive solution of standard products, custom solutions and support, enabling computer and peripheral manufacturers to enter the USB market. For fast and easy system integration, the Suite provides USB device controllers and hubs that deliver a direct connection to USB in a single-chip solution. Lucent recently introduced the Instant USB(TM) USS-720 ASSP, a simple-to-implement interface that permits computer peripheral manufacturers to provide USB compatibility in existing products without extensive re-engineering. Lucent's IEEE 1394 family of standard products includes devices and controllers for connecting both hosts and peripherals.
