No.

Nixon helped to expose Alger Hiss as a communist spy. Hiss was FDR's chief aide at Yalta where he helped seal the fate of Eastern Europe later becoming part of the Soviet empire. Churchill saw this but could do nothing and later wrote about it.

FDR, it is now conceded, was largely brain dead at the time he gave everything away. He died soon thereafter.

Hiss was actually convicted of and sent to prison for perjury since the statute of limitations had run on espionage and treason. Virtually every scholar who has looked at the Hiss case has pronounced Hiss guilty of all three. New documentation from the Soviet bloc confirms Hiss' overwhelming guilt.

Bill -- Nope. Nixon represented conservatism, party loyalty, regional balance and youth. Many Republican party cognoscenti were uncomfortable with Ike; he was a new guy with no political track record. They wanted to be sure they weren't getting another US Grant.

How ya been?

Jeff

Wasn't the reason Ike was pushed to team up with Dick because of Nixon's work against McCarthy?

No. Nixon was the "Pumpkin Papers" guy. I have no real opinion on Alger Hiss's guilt or innocence, but the PP stuff was absurd. Nixon saw Communists under every bed (or pretended to do so, for the good it'd do him) just as McCarthy did.
