That's total nonsense. Chambers put himself in jeopardy! He brought Hiss to the attention of the FBI and Congress! Chambers didn't "put himself in jeopardy": he was caught in a trap and sang like a canary. In these circumstances who can ever really know the truth? Rather like dunking witches: if they survived they were demonically possessed, if they drowned, well, sorry, our mistake. Really, Duncan, have you no idea the pressure J Edgar brought on people to serve his, um, ends? And evidently he wasn't even attracted enough to Chambers to save him.
