I agree, "The English Patient" was very good. I wanted to see it just because of the hype. I don't think I would have considered renting it had it not gotten the reviews that it did. But I wasn't really sure what to expect. I thought it was going to be one of those 'the patient and the nurse live happily ever after' sort of film. I was surprised, but pleasantly so.

The story line I enjoyed very much. It seemed there were three or four sub-plots revolving around the main plot. And then the way the film brought them all together was quite enjoyable. It was also nice to see Willem Defoe play a different type of character.

I most enjoyed the dialogue though. I couldn't quite catch what it was that the German fellow said to the English woman after he mentioned hating ownership. He turned and said something and then she pushed him away from her, got out of the tub (nice body), picked up the dress, and left. Also, why did she slap him before they fell to the floor in a heated embrace just after she entered his residence?

I also enjoyed the fact that there wasn't a lot of unsavory language or the 'in your face' graphic passion. This is one thing I enjoy about some of the films they show on Masterpiece Theater on PBS from time to time. The films are updated and modern, but the love scenes are almost a throw-back to the days of blank and white films where there was more passion without getting undressed. Granted, there was some nudity, but the scenes were about dialogue.

My favorite scene had to be where he was carrying her back to the cave after she had just been in the plane wreck. I loved that part where he commented on the fact that she was wearing the thimbal on a necklace and her answer to it.
