ML & DMG are bearish on semis, part II
Kurlak's comments came on the heels of utterings about near-term troubles from
influential analyst Elliott Rogers of Deutsche Morgan Grenfell on Monday.
Rogers lowered his short-term earnings estimates on automated test equipment
maker Teradyne (TER:NYSE) because he's expecting lower booking orders for the
company's first quarter. This, after Rogers had just told TheStreet.com at the
SEMInvest conference two weeks ago that semi cap stocks had "gotten over the
hump." Rogers' comments Monday sent the entire industry into a deep blue funk.
Teradyne alone plunged 13%, or 6 3/16, to 40 5/16 by Monday's close. On Tuesday it
fell another 9/16.

Rogers' move was also surprising because he had just called Teradyne one of his two
favorite stocks (the other is Applied Materials (AMAT:Nasdaq)) because it was a
best-of-breed player in the test equipment field. He did reiterate his long-term buy
rating on the stock.

Rogers, a perennial Institutional Investor All-Star and semi cap equipment industry
follower since 1984, was traveling in Europe and unavailable for comment. But he
said in his report that Teradyne's first-quarter bookings could come in at $350
million, $50 million below his initial estimates of $400 million.

If that's the trend for the group, then March will come in like a lion for semi
investors.

StockMan,

Re: "After re evaluating AMD's prospects, I see it has tremendous potential in this high margin x86 market."

You need to come to your senses quickly ... YOU WERE RIGHT ... AMD is
headed toward bankruptcy. The issuing of new shares (just a paltry $1B)
could cost AMD $7 in share price over the short run. This is just the first
attempt at getting their head back above water !!

Make It So,
Yousef
