Intel makes its middleware move
Intel is planning to expand its sphere of influence to include enterprise middleware via a series of initiatives designed to prevent the exclusion of the PC from the network computer or terminal-based architectures.

Faced with the threat of losing market share to emerging technologies such as the network computer, the microprocessor giant is seeking to foster the development of middleware products to ensure that the Intel architecture will be viable, no matter which computing models IT managers adopt.

More ways to access the Web are coming to Europe's homes.
Says Peter Bondar, senior vice president for technology and engineering at Acorn, "For the stand-alone home market, the network computer (NC) has lost its opportunity, at least in the volumes that were originally conceived. But there are now new types of devices emerging that rely on the NC concept."
