<<So if little Johnny figures out how to erase the disk or even just trashes one of the telecom applications, the administrator has to start by re-installing all of the original system and software, then re-installing any system version updates and other acquired third party software, then go back through the installed products and sift out the duplications and obsoleted versions.>>

The administrator simply has to create an image of the latest classroom configuration and staore it either on a (gulp!) Jaz disk, network drive, or even a CD Recordeable disk. Then if the system gets trashed. You just install it from your clean image. Takes a half hour with a CD. Maybe 45 minutes off a network drive.

The beauty of the network drive image is you can load the whole classroom off the server rather than wait and switch CDs from one machine to the other. To automate it, you can eith create an Applescript that launches on shutdown at the end of the day that reinstalls certain folders and updates the system automatically.

If you want to maintain some kind of control, you can create boot floppies with the same kind of Applescript. Have a dozen or so of these and put them in all the machines at startup and simply monitor for hangups.
