Now McNealy has control of an important standard himself -- Java, which many believe to be key to the Internet's future. So what does he do? He pretends he's going to release it to a public standards body, while secretly retaining full control for Sun. He tried to get his Javasoft subsidiary certified as a standards body! That ploy was rejected by the International Standards Organization, but Sun is due to reapply this week.
