And I haven't seen ANY meaningful competition for Merced.

Maybe you don't get out enough? Try Alpha from DEC/CPQ and, of course, Sparc from SUNW. Merced is actually playing catch up.

barry, i'm not saying intel isn't the best chippy company by far. they are. what i'm saying is that the marginal difference in those 16 chips before merced does not mean as much as the dollars saved by purchasing an alternative (not to mention the pricing pressure on the REAL THING). this list grows and grows as the chips become cheaper and cheaper.
