Hello! Ken, The experience that you shared with us regarding your grandfather was "heart felt". It's unfortunate that we weren't able to bottle up some of the "stuff" that our Grandfathers were made from! My Grandfather on my mother's side, came to Canada and saw nothing but opportunity---during the depression, when apparently there was no work to be found ( at least that paid $$)---in his broken English he was able to buy a small farm , and got a job in a mini-steel mill------so basically he worked from midnight until 9:00 A.M., came home to the farm---had breakfast----went out to the fields, groomed the grain, loved the animals, ----then when he came in for dinner, he would grab a quick nap for about an hour or so, and then back to the Steel Mill........very impressive work ethic, and according to my Mom and Grandmother, they do not every recall him complaining a single day in his life! Why??--it appears that he thought he was the luckiest man alive--------he came home one morning from the steel mill only to find that the farm house had burnt to the ground--no one was injured or hurt---that winter he made a covering for the basement, and his family ( which at that time included my Mom)-lived in that covered basement until the spring!!! My Grandfather then proceeded to keep his Steel Mill Job, maintain the farm crops, look after the livestock, and basically single handedly re-built the farm house from the ground up. When the house was completed, my Grandfather was thrilled to find out that he was going to get a few days vacation ( with pay) because he was never late or ever missed a day of work at the Steel Mill.. Apparently he had great difficulty understanding why someone would pay him not to work---anyway he took advantage of the opportunity by having a party to celebrate their new re-built home, and to celebrate his 52nd. Birthday!!! The few friends he had celebrated with him, apparently it was one of the few times my Mom remembers my Grandfather acting quite silly and appearing to be very happy-( usually he was a very soft spoken and reserved man, respectful of everything around him!). Anyway the next morning, still on one of his days off, he got up very early, grabbed a hold of a fishing pole ( he kept promissing that he would go fishing some day when he got the chance---this was going to be the day----he had a healthy breakfast, and told my Grandmother that he was just going to sit down and rest a few minutes before he went fishing----he passed away sitting in a chair holding on to a fishing pole----------Ken!!! I tend to agree with you!! I guess they just don't make them like they use to!!!! Ken!!! Thanks for reminding me to honor my Grandfather!!!
