CPQ sells a lot of sub-$ 1000 (now even talking about sub-$600) system with AMD K6 chip, their profit margin has been razor thin and finally warned bad Q1, cautious Q2...

Dell sells high end, high profit margin system with Pentium II 300MHz, 333MHz, and predicted a health growth for FY98.

What a coincident!

RE: I really have to wonder why Intel choose to drop this bombshell, AND follow it up with a
doom and gloom interview by Barrett (to the effect that the Sub-$1K market is ALSO
getting hammered),

Could it be because its the truth ?

Gary - Re: "AMD has suffered disproportionately than Intel: -25% vs -10%. "

Gee..that breaks my heart!

Re: "Who in their right mind would buy AMD's newly issued debt or
stock when the sky is falling? Indeed, this week alone stock-price wise,"

That's a rather Machiavellian interpretation - I wish it were so. However, I believe Intel is experiencing a slowdown - confirmed by Compaq (perhaps STARTED by COMPAQ) after the market closed today.
