Phillip, you are flat out wrong when you say the manufacturing model can be duplicated in a weekend. If that's true why haven't CPQ and GTW been able to duplicate it (they've certainly spent a lot more time than a weekend trying to figure it out and both have major inventory problems)? JIT manufacturing is a complex process that requires a lot of precise planning. It's not sum jury-rigged thing put together by programmers -- it requires industrial engineers and systems analysts (not what programmers sometimes refer to themselves as, but the real thing -- people who understand physical systems design and logistics). Dell's edge over its competitors is that it knows how to implement JIT systems, and none of its competitors have been able to come close.

Regards,

Paul

Compaq is NO.1 in the PC market, and it's tough to maintain the lead. When you heard the expected winning team fumble, there are many ways to interpret the cause. If you think a few programmers can accomplish the job, you may underestimate the complexity(as CPQ did).

Looks like Dell is on the prowl in the Networking arena. Check out MRVC's network div. NBASE

Dell better be taking business away from Compaq. The
price increase here is nothing short of a mania;
Compaq's earnings last quarter were about 650 M. That's
about as much as DELL made all last year (after splitting
in three consecutive years). Dell's market capitalization
is now almost exactly the same as Compaq's (about 45 Billion).
DELL's numbers look silly next to Compaq's, and they
continue to profess that they can sell boxes for $1500 or
so while others are struggling to sell $850 boxes. This
whole industry is ripe for a juicy correction. After that,
the $600 boxes are where the money is. Those who really
believe that DELL's growth is not slowing must be kidding
themselves.
