Robert, if Compaq was priced less or even at the same prices as Dell, Dell would be crushed over night. Compaq tonight announced they are going to have "substantial" price decreases and also increase their advertising. If you live by price you die by price, with prices being equal what else is Dell bringing to the table, Compaq has networking companies, Tandom, DEC, and 80,000 professional resellers who can install, assist and provide a complete host of services for their clients at about the same price as Dell.

Dell has a short term window of opportunity right now, they better hook up with an international integrator and soon or they will be nothing more than "just a box" maker when all computers will be sold over the internet for $599 and less. Look at Internet trading as a good example, I used to pay Schwab $89 plus dollars per trade just a year ago, and now I am at $29.95 and happy about it because of the Web.

ON a side note, one of my largest whole sale distributors in my business is building one of the largest BTO distribution and configuration centers in the United States. They are going to sell BTO computers from "all" major and even clone manufacturers. Advantage to the consumer will be that they can also order from Ingrams 80,000 resellers, any of the other 45,000 products that they sell.

My real point is that everyone and their freik'n brother (and sisters) will have BTO computers sold on the NET by the end of this year. No one will make money unless you offer a service, this will smell just like the disk drive business before the year is out.
