<< If the G4 is as Powerful as IBM's new Power3 CPU, it may even give the Merced a run for its money.>>

With all these developments in the PowerPC being announced, is it likely that Merced will be built on technology from 1995?

Think of it. The basic Merced RISC architecture was announced in circa 1995. Does this mean that they are scrapping the blueprints everytime new chip-making technology comes out? Each year, they are pushing die sizes and circuit paths smaller. Copper-wire technology has been introduced. Newer materials and cooling systems are being developed.

Is Merced keeping up by integrating the changes as they go along, or are they starting fresh each year?

I think what killed Copeland was the fact that Apple kept making changes and additions to the OS as new technology came on the rise. That way, the project could never be completed and they were constantly trying to debug the new components.

Merced may never see the light of day.

My musings.
