RE: Serial Numbers / Channel Check.

Someone on the Yahoo SYQT thread suggested checking serial#'s to determine how many units SyQuest has shipped. While I was out tonight, I stopped by Fry's and Computer City and checked some serial numbers. (They're on the outside of the boxes.)

The highest serial numbers that I saw (with the leading digits removed):

SyJet: 173,XXX
SparQ: 152,XXX
EZ230: 20,XXX

It looks like SparQ *HAS* been selling fairly well, and has probably shipped about 100-120,000 so far this quarter.

Now the bad news (for SyQuest shareholders). I asked the Fry's sales manager how the SparQ's were selling. He said that they were selling really good and that they were a better value BY FAR than anything else, even SyQuest's other products. He said that since they got SparQ, EZ230 has been completely dead and SyJet has been a slow mover. They (Fry's) lowered the prices on EZ230 to $128 to try to move some. They still had the pallet of them in the floor area, and my initials were still written in the dust on one of them.

Now, assuming they sell 150,000 this quarter, that's about $22-30 million in revenue from SparQ. If they've truly cannibalized their other lines, I'd be surprised to see more than $10 million outside of SparQ. That's $40 million tops, IMHO. And I only think they'll hit 150,000 this quarter if they count sell-in instead of sell-through. (Anyone know which way they do it?)
