I awoke early-as is my custom-in order to get on the computer without guilt before the rest of the family is up. Coffee cup in hand, I see lots of posts---why! There are 21 at Rambi! Oooo-more fantastical adventures? A discussion about interpersonal relationships? An elaboration on the philosophy of myths? Will James finally tell us what he did on Valentine's Day? But no! A line of blank posts...accompanied by gloating, open challenges, threats! I am very tempted to post a list and assign the 00 numbers. Lest this seem like malfeasance on my part, I remind you that I am first and foremost a mother, with all the controlling instincts that entails. Then I thought, well, we have new members and perhaps they are not aware of the elite classification assigned this thread, and some education may be necessary. As the situation has deteriorated so rapidly in the past few weeks, I have been asked to conduct a remedial course in Elitist Behavior Pertaining Specifically to Posting. For a while at least there was the pretense of posting some remark in the pursuit of 00s, even if the quality of the comments suffered. ("Just letting everyone know--morning came again! Oh and look! I got 8300!") But we seem to have given up any pretense of indifference..("Oh, really? I got 8300? Oh well. As I was saying..") or modest surprised pleasure ("I did? 8300? How nice! I was hoping, of course, but didn't want to be greedy") Now all of you, being members of this elite group, should realize that there is a proper way to handle these situations, a code of conduct required for those who represent the favored, gifted and superior. It is up to us to set examples for the riffraff. So here is a little gentle reminder memo for your edification: GUIDELINES FOR THE PUZZLING PURSUIT OF TOTALLY AND MYSTICALLY MEANINGLESS INTEGERS: 1. One must appear blas‚ at all times. Any overt expression of greed is regarded as vulgar and is highly discouraged. 2. When composing the particular post that one hopes will result in the capture of an important number, one should make at least a token effort to make it relevant to some topic currently under discussion. 3. Upon achieving the desired post, one should not call attention to oneself, but wait for someone else to remark upon it, at which point, one may then modestly acknowledge the feat. 4. Gratitude should be expressed to those who helped you in your achievement, e.g., it is suggested that credit be given to the "assist", the poster who fed you the leading number or to Rambi, who made it all possible. 5. The use of weapons is expressly forbidden. We have worked hard to earn our reputation of elite, privileged, socially unconscious snobs here at Rambi and I would hate to see us lose our status because we fail to discipline ourselves in this simple area. Let's remember who we are and what we stand for and behave accordingly.
