Here's an article I came across about Trimble. I'm not sure what to make of Fultz' comment that Trimble is deliberately leaving software development to its resellers. A hint that software revenues will be declining? Otherwise, a rather upbeat article.

The second thing I came across might not be of much importance, but I included it because few have access to the info.

Trimble demos GPS and AMPS on circuit board

Atlanta - Trimble Navigation Ltd. demonstrated the first single-board
implementation of a global positioning system (GPS) receiver and AMPS
cellular phone at the Wireless '98 show, here. The CrossCheck unit uses
the Sierra custom ASIC developed last fall by Trimble, based on a 68330
core, with the host processor used for both GPS modulation and AMPS
call-setup protocols.

Rather than try to aim at a consumer mass-market immediately,
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Trimble is assuming that first users of the
dual-function unit will be fleet-management specialists. The GPS ASICs
could be integrated in a single board with other wireless services, such
as digital cellular TDMA, CDMA or GSM systems, or Enhanced Specialized
Mobile Radio systems such as the Motorola iDEN radio. A typical
AMPS-based unit would carry a list price of $799.

Trimble also demonstrated its fleet asset-control software package and
is developing similar packages for navigation and e-mail.

Robert Fultz, wireless-systems manager for the company, said that
Trimble is deliberately leaving the bulk of software development to its
resellers. Trimble will provide a generic OEM platform for others to
customize.
