Merrill Lynch just gave a very positive report of HP efforts at high-end work stations. They stated that there would be increased growth in UNIX, which is dominated by HP, and that this domination will accelerate with the introduction of the Merced architecture. The short-term rating was 2, and LT was 1. Earnings were projected at at $3.30 for 98, and $4.05 for 99. I also think this discounts the increasing revenue from E-commerce (Verifone), and from the digital camera-- which will not be profitable for a while, but has obviously been all losses during the product development period.

Keep your bloomers on, as someone said a year ago, HP gets a lot of singles but not too many home runs.

The only thing that may weaken their presentation will be the "software" side of the story.

Dan, what do you mean?

Dan, Your calls on hwp have been solid, so how do you evaluate today's rather big move (up 1 3/8 to 64 7/8) in the absence of news? With all of the pricing pressure on the PC and printer segments, it's hard to see any basis for optimism this quarter. Do you think they're just "drafting" Microsoft?
