TO THE THREAD: I'm not sure what all the panic is about. I've been in Compaq since '94 (I bought at around 32, it went to 50, back to 32, then up, then down, then up some more...). This is a VERY VOLITILE stock! It does this! As hpeace (or Steve) keeps saying (and he's been in far longer than I have) he has witnessed so many Compaq crashes that he can't count them anymore. And yet, it has always recovered with time and achieved new highs.
Alot of the stock action is also the nature of high-tech investing. At least twice a year, the market overreacts and sells off as though the great technology age is over. No one is going to buy computers anymore! And then a good earnings report comes out by Intel or Dell or Compaq and they overreact in the other direction. THis is a very histrionic market... I try not to act in accordance with it, and I sleep better.
I also don't understand how the great management of Pfeiffer that was touted just 3 weeks ago has turned inept? Compaq has GREAT management. That doesn't mean that they are infallible. But it does mean that when they encounter problems, they make the right corrections and get back on course. That has been their track record, and there is no reason to believe that they have suddenly turned stupid.
Compaq will get back on track and the analysts will love the stock again, and act like they predicted it all along. When? Don't know (thats why I don't trade...). But does anyone believe that Compaq stock wont be worth ALOT more a year from now?
