Big Pharma Report- 3/07/98

Week

High Tech stumbled and Big Pharma rumbled (+1.1%) as compared to increases for the record Dow (+0.3%), the record S&P (+0.6%) and the declining NAStie (-1.0%). Merger fever heated up as Astra reported on Friday that it is looking to merge with either Zeneca, Schering or Bayer. Five of the "Healthy 13" set all-time highs; WLA (158.44, 3/06/98), ABT (76.13, 3/06/98) , PNU (41.88, 3/06/98) and JNJ (75.56, 3/02/98).

WLA was the week's star (+6.6%) based on merger rumors and the continued growth of Lipitor and Rezulin. WLA is now up 32.7% from its 12/05/97 level of 117.50. Here was the Big Pharma Report WLA comment on that date: "This may be a great buying opportunity for WLA....if you feel that the FDA will not take Rezulin off the market and the level of Rezulin liver abnormalities does not increase."

For one of the few times in the last two years, PFE was in this week's doghouse (-2.5%) reflecting expected profit-taking off the 2/27/98 high of 91.44. This healthy profit-taking was evident in other 1998 winners; SGP (-2.2%), JNJ (-1.5%) and GLX (-1.5%).

YTD 1998

Big Pharma (+15.0%) continues to be one of the strongest sectors in 1998 almost doubling the record Dow (+8.4%), the S&P (+8.8%) and still ahead of the NAStie (+11.7%).

With a rumored merger battle approaching, SBH (+26.4%) has climbed back to the top. WLA (+25.6%) is close behind as a result of the urge to merge rumors and Lipitor/Rezulin sales.

LLY (-5.0%) and AMGN -2.3%) are still in the YTD red.

Big Pharma News You Can Use (BigKNY3 Comments)

-CNBC reported on Friday from a week old Fortune magazine article that an "expanded definition of ED has led to wild estimates of the future incidence of the condition."( In reality, no one knows how small or large the ED market will be. For proof, review the PFEr Challenge estimates for 1999 Viagra sales. The range is from $175 million to $6.2 billion.)

-Wyeth-Ayerst has withdrawn its NDA for angiotensin II receptor Verdia due to questions concerning its safety profile.

-AHP has announced a 2-1 split.

ED News You Can Use (BigKNY3 Comments)

-V Day Countdown: -24 Days

-The CEO of VVUS commented that the pending approval of Viagra "will hurt second and third quarter sales (of MUSE)".

-Due to "audience demand", WAGA-TV (Fox) of Atlanta ran four consecutive days of news segments on ED and Viagra. A similar broadcast was run on Fox-5 in NY.
