I could tell you all kinds of storys that are extremely Runyanesque, a favorite theme among Americans.

Sadly, this is not a favorite theme among Americans any more. Runyanesque successes are envied, despised, and targets of quick buck legal manipulators. When they fall, America cheers.

Couldn't agree more with your last two posts re. the 'good' and the 'negative' parts of the Asian culture. One point I would make is that the resistance to admitting a defeat or recognizing a problem is the issue of Face. While this is difficult for Americans to understand there is a good side of the face issue. That side protects family and friends from the "not-nice" stuff. Or as we would know it shame and ridicule. The recent spate of Japanese suicides enforces this I believe.

It just seems to us to be extraordinary exercise in P..... against the wind. I think the Asian mind says "with time I can beat this". The only problem is the judgement on when it really is time to throw in the towel. When you throw in the towel you are having a ripple effect on all of those close to you.

East and West both have the same emotional experiences. The Eastern approach is more meditative and lengthy where we Westerners are ready to make the decision and move on to bigger and better pastures. Quick!

Just the Sunday afternoon ramblings of a student.
