I thought Dell outsourced support to DEC.

JMHO.

Paul..if you put DELL in the same category as a Volvo, then I wouldn't take a Dell computer if it were given to me. Sorry, Stephen

Dell first....Compaq last!
The question is who sold more boxes? COMPAQ! Number 1 in January, again. Problem: High inventories, shrinking margins. No problem, just blow the excess inventory out at bargain rates(which IMO will hurt other box makers I.E Dell). Take over DEC, start out fresh and dominate the industry!

As you said, your "brother-in-law wont let go of his Dell". And you wont let go of your Volvo. Well we are all creatures of HABIT. Just as your brother will buy another Dell, and you will buy another Volvo.
Guess what the MILLIONS of people that buy Compaq, will buy Compaq again. Now I ask you, who will win this WAR? Answer, who else COMPAQ!

Hi Paul,
Actually, as far as laptops are concerned I would not buy either, I have been using Thinkpads for some years now and am sold on them. The 7xx series are the class of the field, but they cannot yet compete on price. Getting better though. I still get employee discounts, so it's less of a consideration for me. I did read recently though that for at least a short while CPQ had the laptop lead over Toshiba, and they are consistently up among the leaders in volume. Of course, I also read that as usual, Dell is moving up fast...

John

Hi Paul,
Actually, as far as laptops are concerned, I would buy neither. I have been using 7xx model IBM Thinkpads over the past 4 years, and in my opinion the high end Thinkpads are the class of the field. You pay for it though, but I can still get an IBM employee discount, so it's not too bad for me. I did see articles a month or two back though, that said CPQ had caught up to Toshiba and was right at the top in laptop sales volume. Maybe they are doing it via bulk pricing to corporations, I don't know. I'm not a fan of touchpads anyway, so I would not even consider CPQ or Dell. Dell does not make their machines anyway, every time I see a laptop comparo in PC magazine, they list 3 or four machines identical to the Inspiron, it's made by a Taiwanese company (I think). Pricing is very good though, for what you get.
