Neither Kurlack or Merill Lynch anticipated a $0 earnings for CPQ. As for my judgment, I trusted INTC's management when they said they would have a flat 1st Q. It is my belief that they knew, and perhaps told selected analysts, that CPQ was a major problem a lot earlier than March 3, 1998. They had a duty to tell their shareholders that their [previous statement of flat earnings was going to be incorrect a lot earlier than waiting for it to be off by 10%-13%.
