Okay folks, I'm gonna interrupt the party with a story about our weekend.
Lately this small gang of boys (ages 10-13?) has been using the utility land next to our house as a sort of clubhouse/BMX strip. These boys are shouting some really offensive language. Friday they were lighting off firecrackers, so Spouse calls the police. The officer arrives and detains the two remaining boys while Spouse shows him the mound of dirt with fresh pyrotechnic residues.
Yesterday Spouse and Helen get into their car to go out. As soon as she pulls forward, the boys on their bikes surround her, circling slowly. One of them calls her a "b*tch".
Later that day they're back to their tricks under the high-volt wires. I pop a fresh cassette inti the Handycam and start filming over the top of our fence.
An hour later I go out to mow the lawn. The boys, six in number, form a semicircle around me and challenge me. "Why were you videotaping us?" (Voice of rebellious preteen.) I am pretty flustered, right? "Ya really wanna know?"
"Yeah."
Well - you were using some really awful language earlier. If yu stop that, I'll stop taping."
The oldest one (?, the apparent Lord of the Flies) says "Oh. That wasn't me. That was some other kids." The chutzpah.
I counter"Well that's for the pictures to decide. Y'all have a good day now."
Then I get to mowing my front lawn. The mower conceals my shaking hands.
Later I peek over the fence. The boys stop in their tracks, stare back and say "Hi there - we see you - why're you watching us?..."
Neighbors have seen these boys strafe kids and old folks on our street.
I'm pretty anxious about having such hoodlums around. It's only a matter of time before vandalism occurs.
I'll take any ideas on how to handle this situation.
(Background info: The utility has given us the runaround about maintaining or fencing off this strip of land. The boys are not from our street. It's not the sort of cohesive neighborhood where folks know each other.)
