A lot of people put a very sinister spin on the upgrade/downgrade game, but I think their focused on the wrong target. I don't think it's because of their big clients that they do this. I suspect it's to take care of themselves. Every time they change ratings on a stock there is a burst of volume in the stock. That translates into commissions for the brokerage houses. The more the brokers convince you to trade, the more money they make, and what better way to make you trade than to issue upgrades and downgrades?

Regards,

Paul

SPM

but do you see this shell game continuing,

The game went on for as long as people were ignorant of their tactics. But now in this info age I think their days are numbered. I have sent some e-mails to CNBC and SEC when I have seen blatant remarks or when I have seen huge trades before any announcement and I have seen CNBC now make snide remarks about Anal-ists making bad calls and their calls at whim. Hopefully in a short time the anal-ists will be honest or extinct. In any case I hope they will be ignored.

<<but do you see this shell game continuing, or is it a cyclical thing (in that they'll straighten up until they think that no one is paying attention, and then start the game again)?>>

I have very little doubt those who are involved with trying to influence the market for their own personal gain will continue to do so. The only way they'll take a "breather" is if there is some type of crackdown on them. On the other hand, I don't want to "lump" all of these people in the same category...hopefully the majority of them are on the "up and up."
