Bill Gates and handheld computers:

03/09 16:21 Gates sees huge growth in handheld devices

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said Monday he expects handheld computing devices ultimately to become as popular as full-size personal computers.

Gates, in a speech to a banking trade association, did not specify when he expected the devices to explode in popularity, but noted they have a long way to go.

About 80 million personal computers are sold annually worldwide, while so far the market for handheld devices has been limited to about four million units, Gates noted.

''That small device will eventually sell in the same volumes as the PC itself,'' he said.

The market for handheld computers has proven to be a difficult one, and just last month Apple Computer Inc. said it would stop development of its 5-year-old Newton platform.

Microsoft recently launched a second version of its Windows CE operating system for palmtop computers to compete with the popular Palm Pilot from 3Com Corp.

The new devices, which are just hitting the market, are smaller than the previous Windows-based handheld PCs.

Gates has long promoted the concept of a digital wallet that would allow users to transact business electronically -- technology he now says is incoporated in the company's Internet Explorer browser.

He said broader acceptance of encrypted ''smart cards'' would increase security and drive more electronic commerce, and said Microsoft is building the technology into upcoming versions of its software.

Gates said "I expect the Palm Pilot to be a big winner for us. NO NO I MEAN PALM PC!!"

If Benhamou is really interested in creating shareholder value, he should:

1. Staff the Palm Pilot division with excellent management.
2. Spin it off to shareholders as an independent company.

There is so much potential here it deserves to be the central focus of some company's attention.
