Your post is an excellent paraphrasing of my thoughts, Mary.

I don't know why Dell is the way it is, (multiple systems, many obsolete, patched together), but there could be a good reason for it. For example, a custom Cobol program can do whatever you want it to do, literally. This is not true with off the shelf packages.

The risks with this sort of hodge-podge environment are:
-Higher likelyhood of catastrophic meltdown
-More difficult to get top flight employees
-small, simple changes more difficult to achieve - ex. simple ad-hoc report in modern system is much easier.

Anyway Im not trying to dog Dell or anything, its a great company for sure. My problem is that the mkt perception is that Dell is some sort of enterprise software effenciency engine which imo it is not. Just my 2c.

Mary Re "mainframe architecture (for a new system)"

IMHO nothing can approach the transaction rate of a mainframe
system. Is there any need to replace something that cannot be
equaled?

Adding additional processing power or upgrading the system is the
way to go for this type of application.
