When they talk about internet "backbone", what is it that they are really talking about? It can't be just the fiber, since there are several companies out there (Qwest, Level 3, IIXC, to name just 3) building state of the art networks now. How big is UUNET, for example, compared to the rest of the providers in the business world? Can anyone enlighten me?

I agree. Pure, triple-distilled politics. The self-serving statements by competitors and critics on this and other "monopoly" issues (ie Microsoft) are disgusting at worst, and entertaining at best.
