Although real delays won't be known for G* for awhile, they expect a 250 ms total delay time. GEO birds are about 500 ms. An interesting fact I heard at the conference was that a GSM call has a 250 ms delay, just for reference. The ITU says that to qualify for "toll quality", a call must have less than a 400 ms one-way delay. That gives a lot of breathing room. The guy from VSAT said they make GEO calls as a test all the time to people just to see if they notice any delay. In general, people can't tell.
