Asians get a case of the big blues: IBM Japan Starts Installation
Services for Home PCs

March 10, 1998 (TOKYO) -- IBM Japan Ltd. began a service to set up
personal computers and install software at the homes and offices of
individual customers.

The company is providing such services in the Kanto and Kansai
regions. Initially, IBM Japan planned to expand the service nationwide
in 2000, but it decided to start this year.

A company official said that IBM Japan will charge a uniform fee for
the service even in remote islands and mountainous regions, although
additional transportation charges will be required in certain areas.
He said that the basic charge is 14,000 yen (US$110), and that an
additional fee is required when service is requested. For example,
installing an operating system from a CD-ROM costs 6,000 yen (US$47)
and setting up a personal computer costs 12,000 yen (US$94).

However, only users whose IBM Japan personal computers are not linked
to networks, such as local area networks (LANs), are eligible for the
services.

The company official also said that the operating systems covered are
DOS/V, Windows and OS/2.
