In political contexts, for example, it often refers to a willingness to defer to authority, to "know one's place.">> The above translation comes pretty close. The only part I have to take exception to is the last one where it is translated as a willingness to ''know one's place". While approximately correct, it isn't totally correct and the connotations this phrase carries today are entirely wrong. If memory serves, this was the sole inscription above the entrance to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. That may give some more of the flavor of the word. Thanks and apologies for the digression. Torben
