Mike,

Your post about focusing on the low end was interesting, but I take issue with taking the focus off DLT and the high-end. First, DLT is a great business and is making QNTM $$$. This business will grow tremendously as more servers are deployed and more info is placed on networks. Second, you have to play in the high-end because that is where you come up with your new tehcnology, which will eventually slide to the low end DD. Third, I think you can make money on whatever niche you want if you do it better than your competition....don't have to be in the highest volume area.

I would love QNTM to come out with a great, cheap drive that would be perfect for the sub $1000 computers....that they could earn a profit on.

Dell refuses to play the sub $1000 game and is making money hand over fist. They still say they aren't having the problems that CPQ is going through.

So either disk drive prices have to rise, which is something the drive makers have little control over, or: the drive makers have to adjust to current conditions and:
1. focus on staying alive, which is the first priority
2. figure a way to make drives as cheaply as possible.
3. current high-end drives, the former prosperity hope, are mainly a source of revenue, because of increased competition/overcapacity/whatever.

Nobody knows how long the current glut will last. Certainly, the small investor is the last to know, even if he's following the sector.

But the business of the drive companies is to make money. Can they figure out a way to do this reliably?

PS: I'm not trying to be negative, I'm just saying that companies are supposed to make money, even if it's not always easy. How much longer is the disk drive sector going to be stuck in a boom-and-bust cycle?
