Give thread founders discretion over the thread's content.

Have mixed views of this idea. My main objection is that more than a few thread founders become (or are from the start) extremely possessive of their creations, and tend to become extremely vexed when contributors deviate from the Prescribed Course. As you say, naturally those who object to being cast into outer darkness for disagreeing with the founder can start another thread. Doesn't matter with the Coffee Shop, but for stocks it could make a difference. Say you've taken an interest in something you've never traded before. You do a search and are offered a choice of seven threads, each with recent posts. Which do you choose? Must you read all? Sorta a bore.

I repeat: what I really think is that

1) for stock threads, there should be no excessively irrelevant posting allowed (no contests for Prime Numbers, for example--they can take up a lotta space and annoy Serious People); no really disgusting obscenity; no genuine threats.

2) for the Coffee Shop: no really disgusting obscenity; no genuine threats.

And that's it. I agree with Penni that most threads manage to work out some sort of self-policing system. The less intervention, the better. For us, and for the people at SI who have better things to do than listen to the puling complaints of the crybabies.
