Yes, people may be betting on a particular horse to win that race. You seem convinced that people are likely to bet on cpq. Hope you're right - but I'd love to be able to take a poll right now and ask, "If a gun were held to your head and you had to pick a winner on the current pc price war who's your pick?"

As for the merger I have no independent way of determining cost savings, extraordinary costs incurred, write-offs, economies of scale, etc. etc. If I were independently wealthy and cpq let me in the door I guarantee I could sit down with the right people and determine what the merger will cost or save in the short term. Absent that I have no alternatives - you're right the so-called experts can't and will not imo do it either. They will not be permitted to sit at cpq/dec meetings and listen to consolidation plans and meetings with each department head giving quantified savings or costs. Without that the experts are just guessing until the actual numbers appear. And that is exactly what those numbnuts will do - guess and state a bunch of brown numbers they pulled out of their ass as though it were gospel.

Wall Street hates the unknown which is why Compaq is having so much trouble now. The enormous savings from the merger may or may not materialize. The losses from the price war as Compaq cleans out their old inventory is a fact. Down the road I'm sure Compaq will make a good profit for those willing to wait. In the meantime there are many investments out there that would provide a better return. Right now I would say that Compaqs credibility rating is rather low. Until you change the public perception this stock isn't going anywhere significant.
