Hello everyone, new to the thread. I do not feel that this type of comparison is justified. If you were to add Cisco, 3Com, and probably Cabletron and then multiply the whole bunch by 2 then you would have something about the size of Lucent.

Remember also that being a networking startup (Cisco in the early days) has no resemblance whatsoever to working for a company the size of Lucent. I was with a networking startup that was purchased by Lucent not that long ago.

Regards,
G

Cisco like Lucent? no way no how. Sure Lucent will have a small
portion in high-performance stuff of all types. But that is a sliver
of the company. For Cisco, it is focussed on high-end networking components. Lucent sells all styles of telephone answering machines, for instance. Livingston Technologies - another example of kitchen appliances. Their big money is in telephone systems, you know, lay a bunch of wire down. A great deal of the revenue at low margin relative to what Cisco brings down for its switchers.
The current price is so emotionally driven, I am tempted to sell
my longs and go short LU! I think this comes back to 60 before AOL breaks below 30. (no splits). Unfortunately that would be the year 2002, maybe.
