Tek, How about being a takeover target? Seems like most Yurie bulls are envisioning a takeover at some stage of Yurie's life. Even if Yurie were never bought out, do you believe it is possible that they could become what Sun is to IBM, or some such analogy?

Thanks, Keith

<<If you looked at my profile you'd notice I went long on NN after they slammed to the ground and bought at 20. However, I'm not a fool, I'll be out by 27-28.>>

Gary,
Actually, you MAY look like a fool if NN goes back to 60.

Perhaps you're right. I sold only half my June calls today and covered my cost. The rest is gravy.

You shouldn't call somebody a dufus because their strategy is different from yours.

I agree and I wouldn't do that. My comment to Bill was directed at his to make a case for NN - not his trading strategy. We were stating that NN was a "pathetic" company. Hugh was attempting to show that it wasn't by using it's gain in valuation over the past 1 day and 20 days. The fact that it was bouncing off it's 52 week low seemed to escape him. The stock was accruing, not because the company made any significant moves (notwithstanding the upgrade today), but because it was bouncing.

ATM was THE HOT TOPIC of discussion at this conference....especially as it relates to doing voice over IP. I came away with the feeling that the industry is rather polarized about this issue.......

Yep... This is definitely true. Sounds like it was a good conference!

It does seem that the QoS issue favors ATM right now, and that IP is still a fairly long way away from having the lack of latency and packet loss necessary to give users the degree of confidence they need to deploy on a large scale........

Yes indeed, I think I've raised this very issue. But IP vendors realize the challenge as well and apparenlty are up to the task.

You are right about the degree of resources being dedicated right now to developing the quality necessary for larger scale acceptance by the end user. IP is the technology that many are making their beds with...and it's coming, but it is a much longer way off than I would have believed from reading your posts.

Why do you say this? Many carriers are already deploying (USWest and Qwest/LCI, Williams, are all being fairly aggressive)

It also is clear that applications like Video just don't do well when compressed (IP).........

Video need not be compressed to run over IP. And it can be compressed over ATM. Compression does not preclude WAN technology. Note the Precept announcement yesterday.

biz.yahoo.com

We use this technology today and it's broadcast quality.

At the very least, I can confidently say that Yuri is in no danger of the ATM business going "Out of Business" anytime soon.

Agreed. ATM still has a play for many years. However, multiservice IP nets (and the promise of them) will reduce the overall available market for ATM access. This coupled with more lower cost ATM CPE devices from new and existing networking vendors could make YURI's life a bit more difficult. No?

So Gary, while you definitely do know what you are talking about, and your knowledge is extremely current, as one would expect from an industry participant I am feeling a little better about the near term demand for ATM access concentrators.

Tek, Thanks for the affirmation. Much appreciated. I'm also glad you're feeling better about near term demand. I too think things for ATM CPE will be good this year and next. YURI's challenge is to maintain market share in this growing market given new entrants and new products from current vendors. A very stiff challenge in my estimation.

Good trading!
Gary
