Moonray: Yet another reason to own LSI Logic - now we are being mentioned as a top competitor for the digital TV market which is expected to be 30 billion by the Y2000. 30 billion looks a tad too high I ask questioningly. Remember we have the BBC thingie. Plus the strength in STBs.

To the LSI Longs, once again don't fret the little stuff and Keep the l/t Faith!

Matsushita aims at 20% of global digital TV market

TOKYO, March 12 (Reuters) - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co said on Thursday it aims to acquire by 2000 a 20 percent share of the global digital television-related market, which analysts expect to be worth around $30 billion then.

Matsushita vice president Yoshitomi Nagaoka said the company's technical strength in such areas as one-chip large-scale integrations (LSIs), original-design central processing units (CPUs) and operating software will help it boost sales of TV set-top boxes, receivers, integrated personal computers and televisions, and broadcast equipment.

"We will experience a dramatic change in the market (with the integration of PCs and TVs)," Nagaoka said.

"We expect chip manufacturers such as SGS-Thomson, LSI Logic , Hitachi and NEC to emerge as our major competitors in the digital TV market," he said.

He said Matsushita was making an "all-out effort" to develop 32-bit embedded CPUs for set-top boxes, which will make faster processing speeds possible.

Matsushita expects digital TVs to begin replacing analogue receivers in the United States in 1998, with momentum growing because of progress in integrating PCs and TVs.
