Second Meeting of the World Semiconductor Council to Be Held in California April 17 Thursday March 12, 1:55 pm Eastern Time SAN JOSE, Calif., March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) will host the second meeting of the World Semiconductor Council (WSC), an international industry forum, in Carlsbad, California, on April 17, 1998. The meeting will be attended by more than 20 top executives from semiconductor companies from the United States, Europe, Japan and Korea. Their discussions at the WSC will focus on trade and environmental issues, multimedia convergence and electronic commerce. The WSC members represent the SIA, the European Electronic Component Manufacturers Association (EECA), the Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ) and the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association (KSIA). The inaugural meeting of the WSC was hosted by EIAJ in Hawaii in April 1997. The U.S. industry delegation will be led by Wilfred Corrigan, CEO and Chairman of the Board of LSI Logic Corporation [NYSE:LSI - news]. The Japanese industry delegation will be led by Masanobu Ohyama, Senior Executive Vice President of Toshiba Corporation. Arthur van der Poel, CEO and Chairman of Philips Semiconductors International B.V., will lead the European delegation; and Chung Hwan Mun, Vice Chairman of LG Semicon, will lead the Korean delegation. Corrigan will preside as Chairman at the 1998 WSC meeting. The World Semiconductor Council was established by the SIA and EIAJ as part of a bilateral trade agreement signed in 1996. Under the so-called Vancouver agreements, the WSC was created to provide a forum for the industry's top executives to communicate and nurture industry- to-industry cooperation. Participating associations are expected to conduct a press briefing following the formal sessions at the Four Seasons Aviara in Carlsbad. In the future, other industry associations from nations or regions with significant semiconductor industries which share the philosophy of free trade and pledge to expeditiously eliminate semiconductor tariffs are expected to join the WSC.
