I found this interesting article on the XLNX thread. Unfortunately for ALTR, it makes some good sense. It's from the LU thread and basically says that LU will put standard-cell hard macros on the chips instead of racing for the umpteen millionth gate.

I don't have the total market pie in front of me, I remember from ALTR's 1996 report that the pie for CMOS (high speed) PLD is:

Xilinx 30%
Altera 26
Lattice 11
AMD 13
others 20

Xilinx has a good niche market with their chips that have on board memory. Altera's design tools are unrivaled.

Another point is that institutions have roughly 80% stake in ALTR with individuals at 15%, so common sense doesn't have to be factor in the price ALTR
