Andy, I get your point about the hardware/software knowing when
a sector is no longer rewrite-able. But again, so what!! Once
you get a warning that a sector is bad on a disk, one, that means
you probably lost data that is no longer recoverable, and two,
you are going to be wary of that disk and want to stop using it.
At that point, the disk becomes unusable as a rewrite-able disk
even if your prior data is largely intact. Therefore, you may
only get 50 or 100 uses out of a disk before it becomes "old"
so to speak and you want to get off it. That is a lot different from
a hard drive where you can reuse it for years on end and from
what I have seen Zips are likewise quite reliable. Just no
comparison to 1.4 MB floppies which routinely fail and CD disks
which also go bad capriciously if less often.
