I saw the following posted on the Yahoo! Syquest thread. I thought it was interesting, even though the Insight response doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Why would one want to discontinue a hot seller? Why not just quote the lead time and take orders from anyone willing to wait for delivery, like every other vendor on the planet does? Anyway, FWIW:

I called the company and got no answer to why the SparQ internal IDE was dicontinued, so I sent them an e-mail. I was concerned that it might be a quality problem. Below is the message I sent and the reply I received back. Demand is Hot put Syquest must get onboard to meet it!!!!!!!!!

Hello,
No, there was no problem except Syquest could not keep up with the demand of inventory. When a mfg has no more to distribute they must discontinue the product.

Hope this helps,

>>"Still, the Jaz 2GB's competitor, the SyQuest SyJet 1.5GB on our WinList, remains the better choice. Though offering smaller capacity (1.5GB), the SyJet copied files 5 percent faster on the same system, and its price difference per megabyte for media is a healthy 30 percent less.<<

Without seeing the specifications of the system the drives were tested on, this is less than meaningful. Jaz2 has an Ultra SCSI interface, which allows synchronous burst transfer rates of up to 20 MB/sec. SyJet uses the older Fast SCSI interface, with a top burst rate of 10MB/sec.

If the test machine was not equipped with an Ultra SCSI controller, then it would not allow Jaz2 to attain its best performance. This is probably why reviews of various removable systems, including SyJet, Jaz and Jaz2, have produced differing test results. When mated with an Ultra SCSI controller, Jaz2 will be faster than SyJet, and tests have confirmed this.

Of course, the cost per megabyte comparison is still valid. But if cost per megabyte were my only concern, I wouldn't buy a SyJet, I'd get a SparQ.
