Ugh! More DTV in-fighting This big debate over digital TV production formats is boring and unending. If it wasn't so important, I'd ignore all the infighting. The complex argument pitting U.S. broadcasters and hardware makers against their Japanese counterparts has escalated into a trans-Pacific trade brawl that could recast the future of digital broadcasting, Junko Yoshida & George Leopold write in EE Times. As the deadline nears for U.S. DTV broadcasts to begin, Japan's public NHK network stirred up things in the battle over whether DTV should use computer-friendly progressive-scan formats or stick with HDTV-style interlaced video. NHK pressed Panasonic to cancel demos of progressive-scan products scheduled for April's NAB. But it all backfired, sources say. NHK's actions drew complaints from the Pentagon to the Japanese government, which told the broadcaster to back off. "NHK pushed the wrong button at the wrong time," a source says.

Considera due cose sulla Matrox : 1) Ha avuto seri problemi economici e si e' rifatta vendendo le m3D (e danneggiando l'immagine del PowerVR :-( ), per cui ha difficolta' a pagare le schede da produrre 2) infatti le schede vengono praticamente prodotte dalla NEC, che produce ufficialmente per la Matrox i chipset delle schede, ma sicuramente anche altro, visto che le memorie la Matrox le compra dalla NEC stessa. Ad ogni modo, da utente di una Mystique170+RR, il mio consiglio e' di pensare ad una combinazione diversa a questo punto. Sarebbe meglio avere l' M-JPEG separato, con una scheda Miro' DC20 o DC30 (che in Italia purtroppo vengono vendute a prezzi assurdi!), perche' ? Perche' nei prossimi 3-5 mesi usciranno schede con 2D migliori di Mystique e Millenium2 e che forniranno opzioni quali il DVx della C-Cube, un Codec Hardware MPEG-2/DVD in tempo reale ed a basso costo. Il primo chipset a fare uso del DVx sara' l' Intel i740, e gli altri non si faranno certo attendere. Spero che i prezzi delle schede Miro crollino, cosi' potro' avere sia il Codec Hardware M-JPEG che MPEG-1/MPEG-2 senza spendere cifre assurde, e nel contempo rimpiazzare il 2D.
