Dear John, interesting article. The US telecom industry is still too highly regulated. There are no local competitions to speak of. The long-distance industry is basically a oligopoly where new entrance is almost impossible. Under such environment, there is no need for the phone companies be it long-distance or local to improve and innovate.

A highly de-regulated telecom industry will benefit coms but we are not there yet.

Telecom industry in Canada on the other hand is much more de-regulated. Long distance is wide open and AT&T, Sprint, MCI, Fonorola etc. had entered the market. The Canadian government is dumb enough to give protection to new entrances like T as if these big US giants need the protections !? (All the Canadian phone companies add up together will only be about 1/5 the size of T ($50 billion)) Local competition was also opened up since last year or so. Metro-net is the biggest local-com player right now.

You asked about Clearnet and Nextel in Canada last time. Clearnet is very agressively competing in the Canadian market and is by-far the most successful PCS player. I havn't got time to get a full picture yet.

Regards

Mang
