Dear Tom:

The post was just by way of demonstrating what has been the problem all along. Metcalfe was as an insider able to articulate it better than I. It points out the dog in the manger strategy that is being implementedby the telcos. They are like a deer held frozen by the light of the digital revolution. What will get them to move is the second wire. If they wait too long they will be bested by the cables but the cables are not much different than the telcos. The tyranny of the wires to the home and small offoce is what these buzzards cling to.

It seems like it is a chicken or egg solution and who will move first is the problem as their is little motivation in the PUC oriented execs mind to take any sort of chance. Actually the real wake call might come through IP phone calls through the ISP's. If the IP's don't take on the telcos at the distribution end the telcos will eat their lunch by supplying the internet connection. I don't know how it will work out but sooner or later (let's hope sooner) someone has to do something. You can appreciate the frustration of the big boys Gates, Grove et al in that they are trying to prime the pump with billions of dollars to get the ball rolling.

This kind of reminds me of how Rockwell Lucent dealt with 3COMS big lead in the 56kbps modem area. They confused the matter until they had all their ducks lined up and then agreed on a standard.

So to answer your question the sooner someone moves the better for GIC the later the worse as the other biggies will have boxes to offer as well.

Regards,

John
