What S. Jobs will do at Seybold

I agree something is up, but my theory is that it will be connected to the copper-process chip.

From my understanding, the big advantage of the copper process is that it reduces energy requirements. So it's most suited to mobile devices. My guess, then, is that Jobs will demo the copper-process chip in a new mobile device, most likely the new PowerBook (Wall Street/Main Street).

Other news that corroborates this: the G3 PowerBook is out of stock; pictures of the new PowerBook have been spotted (see ogrady.com, and J&R gave a listing for Main Street in their online store (http://www.jandr.com/). I'd give this a fairly high probability.

The only thing that doesn't jive with this is the announcement that the first computer the copper-process chip will be used in is the IBM RS/6000, and not until early 1999. How can Jobs demo a working version on a Mac if it won't be useable for a year? Something odd there.

Wild speculation: the chip will be demoed at Seybold in a new handheld device (the AMP?) running Allegro Lite. Corroboration: recent death of the Newton, and leaking of rumors to the press. Probability: close to zero.

Hugues: You forgot the most valuable aspect of the sub $1000 system;
Recruiting for Apple. The profit will be made downstream as people use them and them move upmarket. the same forces will drive the Apple as the WIntel. Faster cheaper each year and so they will migrate upwards along the apple,pathway and new recruits will join the sub $1000 group and start to move up.
This was the most notable lack with Apples high prices, no recruits, as they lost those to WIntels, and look what happened...down strean\m sales died.
