Of course nothing keeps free trialers with an agenda from opening multiple free accounts to circumvent the "three a day policy. I think we are seeing that on the Naxos thread. JLA

Brad,
I can second jlallen's comment. We have seen 6 or more new posters show up on the Naxos thread. They all have fake names, no biographical information and they all showed up on March 13 98 or shortly thereafter. We suspect they are free trial subscriptions. They have all been focusing on the same issue which was the favorite subject of a former poster who was kicked off SI a few months ago. Some of the posts have been offensive in nature. (I have forwarded some of this material to Jill).
Henry

Re: Broadcasting a Private Message

I've been using SI for more than a year and I link right to Message Manager. For whatever reason, I rarely go to the home page. I supposed this is because although I spend a decent amount of time on SI, I do so in very small increments. Thus, I (probably) miss some interesting stuff there.

Therefore, I, personally, wouldn't mind getting a private message from SI with little tidbits about new stuff. For example: "Have a question? Check out SI's FAQ list at: techstocks.com " or "FYI, Bill Gates will be answering messages on the MSFT forum tonight from 6-8". The best way to do this would be to have a private message that automatically goes to everyone that logs on. Once you read it, you don't see it again. Anyone who has tried one of those free e-mail systems knows they do that stuff all the time and it's quite effective. Anyway, just a thought.

- Jeff

P.S. Note that "http://www.techstocks.com/faq.html" is not parsed correctly as a link; the last quote should have been removed.

Brad, on the UTI thread, I just responded to a flame by a "Captain James T. Kirk" by replying to another post by "Captain James T. Kirk" only to discover that the flamer and the other person are two different accounts!

I can't imagine why you permit duplicates. As a programmer myself, I think it would be a simple matter to create an inventory of in-use tags which you update (add/delete) as each of us alter our own profiles. This way, Jill would not have to get involved in re-assigning tag names.

In addition, here is your own guideline for naming:

As part of the registration process, you will select a password and user name. Choose wisely. We may refuse to grant you a user name that impersonates someone else, is or may be illegal, is or may be protected by trademark or other proprietary right law, is vulgar or otherwise offensive, or may cause confusion, as determined by us in our sole discretion.

Brad:

Just to re-emphasize my opinion..... the visitor policy is having a negative impact on many threads that I follow.

Here's a sterling example.....

Furthermore, you have apparently allowed a loophole whereby those who have been kicked off of SI for certain violations of policy can return.

Love SI. Sorry to see it going downhill so rapidly.
